This is a big game in the SEC East. The Gators have already won at Knoxville; if they can also win at Athens they will be in a strong position. Pomeroy says Georgia will win 63-62.
Florida has been playing at a very slow pace for most of the season -- Pomeroy ranks them as 315th in the country in terms of pace -- but they have jumped all over the Bulldogs here at the outset, with a quick trapping defense that has already generated a number of turnovers.
Georgia's big guys are now starting to roll. Trey Thompkins has already drawn two fouls and scored five points, and the Dawgs are starting to toughen up their defense on the inside.
I could have told Billy Donovan not to play Georgia man-to-man. Trey Thompkins is rolling -- he's already got 11 points, and he even hit a three-point shot. Florida was forced to call time.
Florida is now in a very similar position to the one that faced UK late in the first half at Georgia. UK ended up down 11 at the half, and we couldn't quite catch up. Florida really needs to change the pace of this game, and to keep Georgia's big guys away from the basket.
Kentucky is going to have its hands full with Georgia on Saturday -- Rupp Arena or no Rupp Arena. I think your best hope against them is to pack everyone in around the goal and hope that they miss from the outside -- that's how Vandy beat them. But unless we're hitting our three's, we will really have a hard time.
Just a great, great game. Florida has started putting two men on Thompkins every time he catches the ball, and he is still stuck on 11 points. The Gators are also pushing the ball up the floor quickly on rebounds, hoping to score or draw fouls before Georgia can set up its defense -- a tactic that has worked pretty well. Florida is also pushing the ball inside -- they've only taken 6 three's -- and they are 12-17 from the FT line, which helps to explain why they have 9 more points at this stage of the proceedings than we did.
Georgia is now taking too many jump shots, and Florida has started making them pay -- grabbing the rebounds, and racing down the floor before UGA can get its defense going. Plus the Gators just made back-to-back threes.
Trey Thompkins has gotten back on the board -- he now has 15 points -- but he will have to do more, because the rest of his team is really struggling.
Florida has gone into a zone, which has effectively eliminated Thompkins. Georgia is also trying a zone, but they cannot stop Vernon Macklin, who is just killing them on the inside. Macklin now has 16 points, and he will be going to the line to complete a three-point play when we return from the timeout. If he plays like this against us, we will be in trouble.
After about 3 minutes of really bad basketball by both teams, the Georgia players finally remembered that they have Trey Thompkins on their team. They threw him the ball, and he scored, giving him a total of 17 points for the game. This development apparently unnerved Billy D, who called time.
After scoring 41 points in the first half, the Dawgs have only 13 so far in the second. In large part, this is due to a series of incredibly stupid decisions -- charges, bad passes, and an inability to get Thompkins involved. That's the Georgia I want to see on Saturday.
Florida got a putback from Macklin and a three from Kenny Boynton (who has 16 points). Georgia made a couple of short jumpers to hang in there, but Florida is looking very strong right now.
I still think Georgia will give us fits on Saturday. I don't think we have the bulk on the inside that Florida does, and I don't see Coach Cal working in a zone any time soon.
The key is going to be Jones and Harrellson making sure that the Dawgs don't get a lot of second-chance points. Florida has done a very good job in that regard.
It would also be nice if we could finally hit some threes.
Georgia is paying attention better on offense, but Florida is executing very well, and getting lots of rebounds.
I should point out that so far in this game, the Dawgs are 9-16 from the line. Against UK, they were 30-34. That's the biggest difference in the two games.
Also, UK was 10-16 from the line at Georgia, while Florida is 15-21.
Please note that I am not blaming all of this difference on the officials. Florida's team is much bulkier than ours, and they have done a better job of banging with Georgia's big guys.
Georgia 68 - 72 Florida (47.1 seconds left in 2d half)
Well, that timeout didn't work. Trying desperately to get the ball inside, Georgia threw it away. Florida just has to hit their free throws now, and they will have a solid grip on first place in the SEC East.
Florida's point guard went to the line and made 1 of two free throws. Georgia, with no timeouts left, came down and promptly made a hash of its last chance. Finally, a Georgia guard made a desperate dash to the basket and hurled up a crazy shot. It missed, of course, but for once Florida had forgotten about Trey Thompkins -- who picked up the rebound and scored just as time expired!
Finally, the Dawgs seem to have remembered their offense -- which is to simply throw the ball at the goal and then chase the offensive boards. After a thundering putback, Billy D called time for the Gators.
Now both teams are playing like they were at the end of the first half -- really focused, working the ball inside, battling for every rebound. This is great stuff.
The SEC East race has been amazing so far. Florida's game at UT went to overtime. UT beat UGA at Georgia 59-57. And now Florida and Georgia are in overtime.
Florida brings the ball down, but it is stolen by Georgia with 6.7 seconds to go.
Georgia is fouled and makes two FTs to go up 85-82.
With no timeouts left, Florida charges up the floor and their point guard -- who missed the key FTs at the end of regulation -- buries a long three with 1 second left to SEND US TO DOUBLE OVERTIME.
For the record, I'm a guy who fouls with a three-point lead.
Well, the Dawgs had another brain freeze on the offensive end, and went through another series of possessions where they took stupid shots or threw the ball away. And this time the Gators really made them pay, ringing up 11 points of their own -- a lot of them on putbacks against what suddenly appears to be a very tired Georgia front line.
So, as I was saying about 30 minutes ago, Florida will soon have a solid grip on first place in the SEC East. If they keep playing like this, they will not be easy to catch.
Georgia 7 - 11 Florida (15:42 left in 1st half)

I love seeing ESPN's UK commercial in the middle of a Georgia/Florida game.

Georgia 37 - 33 Florida (2:50 left in 1st half)
ReplyDeleteFlorida has done a great job of containing Thompkins, calming down, and getting back into the game. This is a very good game right now.

Meanwhile, Seton Hall is killing Syracuse at Syracuse 37-58. College basketball can be very strange.

Georgia 67 - 72 Florida (1:28 left in 2d half)
ReplyDeleteFlorida just made a silly turnover that led to a runout and a foul. Georgia is at the line and will have a free throw when this time out is finished.
Georgia 68 - 72 Florida (51.8 seconds left in 2d half)
ReplyDeleteGeorgia made the free throw, and then Florida dribbled for awhile and took a long three, which missed. Now UGA has called timeout.
I should also say, for the record, that I thought the officiating in the UK/UGA game was atrocious.
Georgia 68 - 72 Florida (47.1 seconds left in 2d half)
ReplyDeleteWell, that timeout didn't work. Trying desperately to get the ball inside, Georgia threw it away. Florida just has to hit their free throws now, and they will have a solid grip on first place in the SEC East.

ReplyDeleteFlorida missed the front end of the 1 and 1. UGA gets the rebound and calls its last timeout.
Georgia 71 - 72 Florida (21.3 seconds left in 2d half)
ReplyDeleteThis time, UGA doesn't mess around with any play, just firing up a long three which goes in!
Georgia 73 - 73 Florida (end of regulation)

ReplyDeleteGators going to the line.
Georgia 83 - 82 Florida (20 seconds left in OT)
ReplyDeleteFlorida made their FTs.
Georgia was fouled, and made two FTs
Florida MISSED, and Thompkins was fouled. But Thompkins MISSED THE FRONT END OF THE ONE AND ONE.
Florida gets the ball and calls its last timeout.
UGA is now 13-21 from the line. Again, they made 30-34 against us.
Georgia 85 - 85 Florida (End of OT)

Georgia 91 - 104 Florida (Final - 2 OT)
ReplyDeleteWell, I didn't think anyone would score 100 points in an SEC game this year, but obviously I was wrong.
My guess is that next time Mark Fox will foul when he's up 3 and there are less than 5 seconds to go. Let's just hope that doesn't happen on Saturday.
Wow. That was a game. Fun reading. Go UK tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to learn what "making a hash" of a chance means.
