This band out of Bowling Green, KY is heavily influenced by The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., etc. In fact there are so many influences floating here the album has a hard time finding a true sound. At times they seem to blend everything perfectly and it's wonderful, at times they have a good pop song that doesn't fit with the one you just heard, and at times they get lost in the noise of bringing all of these sounds together.
I'm very curious to see where they go from here. There is potential here for these guys to come up with an album of the year if they can put together 10-12 songs that actually work together under one sound, the sound of Cage the Elephant, whatever that is. As this album stands it's not bad and it shows real potential, but it's just a bit lost.
I could see pulling out the songs you like and throwing on a mix tape.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
I'm relieved to see The Heath Post lay some love on Cage (as we long-time fans call them). I noticed that CBS was already airing a rerun of the Jan. 11 Late Show episode last night that featured Cage the Elephant. I imagine that it was trying to capitalize on the online buzz that developed last night in anticipation of this morning's HP review.
