Album Review: Last Train to Paris by Diddy - Dirty Money

Last Train To Paris (Deluxe Version) [Explicit]I find it easy to forget that Diddy at some point broke onto the scene because of an album, or a single, something that showed some musical promise.  In many ways Diddy is the original Kanye West.  He became famous as a producer then released his own album and broke through as a big star.  That first album was back in 1997. Since then he has only put out five albums this latest being his 6th studio album.

This album is quite interesting.  Musically it's pretty experimental and very successful.  He's definitely following the path tread by Kanye West and Kid Cudi, but Diddy is building on a much more pop conscious, much more stripped down sound.  Even though like West and Cudi he's focusing on the darker side of emotions he brings much more life and love than anger to the mix.

Where the album fails is in the lyrics.  Where Cudi and West are strong lyrically Diddy struggles to find a voice.  Also at 18 tracks this album is too long.  It simply can't carry the listener for that many tracks.

I would throw this album on to listen to while making a long solo drive.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

  1. i can hardly ever listen to a whole album on a cross-country drive, and, yet, listening to a bunch of single songs makes a cross-country drive dribble on forever in two- to five-minute increments. i've found the best thing to listen to on cross-country drives is simpsons reruns or spoken-word albums recorded on cassette tapes.
