England leads the series 2-1, with one tie. Since there is only one match left, the best Australia can do is a 2-2-1 result -- which would allow England to retain the Ashes. So for the first time in 24 years, England will be returning from Australia with the Ashes. This will cause great joy in England, and great soul-searching in Australia.

The Ashes, Match 4, Day 4
As expected -- well, as expected yesterday (I certainly didn't expect this when the event started) -- England finished off Australia to pick up its second victory in the series. Australia could only score 258 runs in its second innings, for a total of 356. Since England scored 513 runs in their only at-bat, England won the game by an innings and 157 runs -- an incredible drubbing.

Will the manager for Australia get to coach the final match?
ReplyDeleteThey don't have a "manager" in the way American baseball teams do. The team captain serves the purpose of a manager. Australia's team captain, Ricky Ponting, is now the first Australia skipper since 1890 to lose the Ashes three times -- having lost in 2005, 2009, and now 2010-11. According to the Australian press, Ponting believes he is the man to rebuild the team. But it is not clear whether the team selectors will choose him as team captain for the fifth match or not.
ReplyDeleteI think the NBA should go to some sort of business arrangement where the players of a team are the co-owners of that team and they elect a coach/chairman of the board.
