I have never heard of Josh Groban or heard a song by Josh Groban. So imagine my surprise when I realized that the worst his last three albums have done on the US Billboard chart is 2. This, his latest and 5th album, has hit number 4.
I fully understand now why record executives must have been excited about Susan Boyle when they heard her perform. If Groban is raking in platinum albums they must have had no doubt that Boyle could do the same.
Unlike Boyle, Groban is a classically trained singer, but the production and presentation are similar to what was put around Susan Boyle on her debut. Groban also writes a lot of his material, so he is in essence a singer, songwriter but you would never equate him with the singer, songwriter tradition.
He has a wonderful voice, but for me this album holds no interest.
I could see playing this when having my parents over for dinner.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.
I love it when you review popular albums.
ReplyDeleteJosh Groban is one of the culture's great uniters of the guilt-ridden among the boomers and the self-styled hipsters among the greatest generation.
