Album Review: Body Talk by Robyn

Body Talk [Explicit] [+Digital Booklet]Back in June Robyn came out with Body Talk Pt. 1, the first of three EPs she was going to release in 2010.  She just came out with Body Talk Pt. 3 and along with it released the album Body Talk.  It does not contain all the songs from the EPs but most, and blends them into a solid start to finish album.

Following this series has been a lot of fun this year, as if you were able to watch the development of this album as it came along.  Each EP was a little different, and it was interesting to see Robyn experimenting with different sounds and vibes as we moved from one EP to the other.

This is not an album that will blow your socks off, though it does have one of my favorite songs of the year, but everything she has done this year has been solid and it all comes together on this album as a real gem.  At 15 full length songs we are talking about a dance, pop double album, but it never misses.

At it's core this is simply a dance, pop album.  But Robyn is a solid lyricist who has an interesting way of looking at things.  From her take on being the other woman on  "Call Your Girlfriend" to someone who likes to go clubbing for the music and joy of dancing as on "Dancehall Queen" she gives us an interesting viewpoint on the world.

Even as much as I love this album it's a tough sell at 15 songs long, but that's what we've got and I wouldn't break it down any further.

I love good dance, pop so this is an album I would throw on anytime for any reason.  If you want to know what 1989 Madonna would sound like in 2010 then give this album a listen.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 4 out of 5 stars for Really Good.

  1. "Everybody wants to change the world,
Everybody wants to change the world,
But no one -- no one
    Wants to die."

I've decided that this is my official motto for 2011.

  2. Also, when it comes time for me to tell the kids to do something, I now say: "Killjoys, make some noise!"
