Ah, Footbah overtime

The KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl concludes today in Bowling Green with the finals for Class 3A (11 a.m. Central, Belfry vs. Louisville Central), 5A (3 p.m. Central, Fort Thomas Highlands vs. Christian County) and 6A (7 p.m. Central, Louisville Trinity vs. Louisville Male). Followsup from yesterday's "Ah, Footbah" fun:

-- WPSD wired Mayfield coach Joe Morris for his happy Friday.

-- "The Breds were one of the more dominant teams that I've seen in Northern Kentucky in a while ..."

-- "Patriots Dreams Dashed," worth every bit of 1,000 words per picture.

-- "P-I-R-A-T-E-S, that's the team we love the best!"

-- Louisville Central coach Ty Scroggins is 17-1 in the playoffs.

-- Tonight will be the last time a state championship will be decided among Louisville's "Big Three," at least until after 2014.

-- They won't settle it on the field today, so two of the state's mainline football denominations take their squabble to www.BluegrassPreps.com.

  1. Here's my proposal for class divisions in Kentucky H.S. Football:

    1. Every year, on Thanksgiving weekend, Trinity and St. X play to decide who is the best team in the state. There are no other playoffs for these two teams. The game is always played at Papa John Stadium in Louisville.

    2. Division I would consist of: (1) all teams, both public and private, in Jefferson and Fayette Counties; (2) all Catholic schools, regardless of size; (3) the 40 largest schools (by enrollment) outside of Jefferson and Fayette Counties; and (4) Ft. Thomas Highlands (if not already covered by category (3). Any other school that wants to play in D-I would be eligible to do so, and any team that wins four consecutive D-II titles would have to spend at least the next five seasons in D-I. The D-I title game would be played at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington.

    3. All other schools would be in D-II. The D-II title game would alternate between WKU and EKU.

Now that arrangement would give us some really good playoff games.

  2. I mean, of course, that Division I would include all teams in Jefferson and Fayette Counties OTHER THAN Trinity and St. X, who are only eligible for the Best Team in the Commonwealth Trophy, not the D-I championship.

  3. So grateful to get to hear Hilltopper Todd Hamilton calling today's 5A action on WHOP 1230 AM.

  4. Fort Thomas Highlands is up, 6-0, after Jim Bunning's grandson (Bluebirds quarterback Patrick Towles) sneaks in and the extra-point kick is missed.

  5. A 15-yard punt into a stiff L.T. Smith Stadium wind gives Highlands first-and-10 at the County 35.

  6. Towles records his 15th rushing touchdown of the season, but he fails on a two-point-conversion run. It's 12-0, Bluebirds, with 2:36 to play in the first quarter.

  7. 11:15 to go in the half ... Towles again, and this time the Highlands PAT sails through: 19-0.

  8. The 4A game will end up being the only game of the six decided by less than 20 points.

  9. Trinity 17, Male 0 in the first half.

We bailed on the games and went out to Madisonville's Christmas parade, which was great. I met the brother of Tommy Womack, the lead guitarist of Government Cheese. Turns out those guys lived out by Barkley Regional and were in the Heath school system until moving to Madisonville when the older brother was in junior high. Their dad was a minister.
