Following up on Eric's excellent WPA analysis -- and some good reporting by RC -- here are the scores from last night's state semi-finals:
Class 1A:
Beechwood 14 - 38 Mayfield
Hazard 31 - 30 Lexington Christian
So two small towns from each end of the state make it to the title game. Mayfield is now the only team from the Purchase still playing. By making it this far, Mayfield wins the Coach Rodney Bushong Trophy, awarded by the Heath Post for the best football team of any class in the Purchase.
Class 2A:
Danville 42 - 61 Owensboro Catholic
Corbin 8 - 42 Newport Central Catholic
As I said last week, my instinct in these matchups is always to go with the Catholic school. I thought one of the public schools would be able to pull out a victory, but I should have trusted my instinct. So the 2A title game will be an all-Parochial affair.
Class 3A:
Lou. Central 35 - 18 Paducah Tilghman
Belfry 28 - 23 Somerset
I feel bad for Tilghman, who is stuck with a true 3A population base, while Central is a magnet school that presumably draws from all over Jefferson County. Central should be unbeatable in 3A, and they pretty much are. Next week the Yellow Jackets will get their third state 3A title in four years.
Class 4A:
Lou. Western 16 - 20 Allen C0.-Scottsville
Bell Co. 21 - 25 Boyle Co.
The 4A tournament may have been the best one all year.
Class 5A:
John Hardin 20 - 45 Christian Co.
Harlan Co. 6 - 34 Ft. Thomas Highlands
Another great victory for County, which should get a special award for winning the non-Highlands division in Class 5A.
Class 6A:
Scott Co. 12 - 28 Lou. Male
Ryle 9 - 28 Lou. Trinity
It is ludicrous that Male and Trinity have to drive all the way down to Bowling Green next week just so that Male can get stomped. Couldn't they find a place somewhere in Louisville to play this game?
