Oh, Kentucky

More from the first weekend of the KHSAA playoffs: With Washington County eliminated, I'm jumping off of the Commander bandwagon and onto that of the Anderson County Bearcats, 44-0 winners over visiting Louisville Waggener at Lawrenceburg's Hollie Warford Stadium in Class 5A last night. One of the main reasons is that I love John Herndon's lively, adoring coverage of the home boys in The Anderson News--to wit, after the regular-season-ending win over Spencer County, "'It is time!' (Bearcats coach Mark) Peach shouted at the end of his post-game remarks at Spencer County. 'It is time!' And a team that lived at the edge all season--two overtime games and two others decided in the final minute--is now embarking on the time of the year when a loss means no practice the following week. By winning the district championship with an overtime win over Oldham County on Oct. 22, Anderson put itself in an enviable position. The Bearcats, now 7-3, will be heavily favored over Waggener, 1-9. The combination of being a one seed--John Hardin is the other in the regional tournament--and the yearly rotation of regional hosts means the Bearcats would be home all the way through the state semi-finals this season. The only road game in the playoffs would be for the championship game at Western Kentucky University." ... Paducah Tilghman's opponent next Friday will be Edmonson County, 21-0 winner over Webster County in Brownsville last night and bent on returning the favor of an upset to the Blue Tornado. Writes Michael Compton in The Park City Daily News, "Friday’s win sets up a rematch with Tilghman next week in Paducah. The Blue Tornado rolled past Butler County 45-9 and are 10-2, with a nine-game winning streak. 'We were up at halftime against them last year,' (Edmonson coach Kyle) Pierce said. 'They are a great football team. We’re going to have to travel three and a half hours to get down there. Obviously the odds are stacked against us, but high school football is crazy. On a given night, anything can happen. We’re going to go down to Paducah and try to get a victory.'" ... The last of the first-round matchesup kicks off at 1 p.m. Central, Ashland Paul Blazer at Covington Catholic in a Class 5A tilt.

When you procure your copy of Kentucky's Natural Heritage: An Illustrated Guide to Biodiversity or Lessons in Likeness: Portrait Painters in Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley, 1802-1920 for that special Kentuckian on your Christmas list this year, think a good thought for the campers at Green River Lake State Park who might be fulfilling your order the next morning in Campbellsville.
