Liveblogging the UConn game

Can the Cats get Coach Cal his 40th win at Kentucky tonight? Let's find out. The game should start in about 8 minutes -- we're waiting for the Magic to finish off Miami LaBrons. LaBron just turned the ball over with his team down six and only 1:06 left in the game, so it shouldn't be long now.

  1. The LaBrons are down 8 with 18 seconds to go, and they are still fouling. This is ridiculous.

    ANOTHER FOUL BY MIAMI!

Here's an idea, Miami: play hard during the first 47 minutes of the game, and then you won't have to commit all these fouls at the end.

Wow, UConn looks really good. So far the Huskies have taken six shots and made five. Jones has all 8 of UK's points, but I don't think it's realistic to expect him to outscore UConn by himself.

  4. By the way, Miami's fouling strategy did not work. They still lost.

UK is hanging in there, but Knight is really struggling from the field. If he doesn't get going, I don't think UK has enough firepower to hold off Connecticut.

Well, this could get ugly. UK has no one who can score other than Jones, and UConn is slowly pulling away. Calipari just called time hoping to stop an 0-5 UConn run.

UK did score four points to cut the UConn lead to 2, but the Huskies responded with a putback and a steal (they called time to keep possession).

Well, Miller and Jones are both on the bench with two fouls each. We're having to play Vargas and Harrellson at the same time. And Knight only has 2 points in the game.

I will be very surprised if UK isn't down by at least 10 points at the half.

This is about what I thought would happen. Without Jones, and with Knight continuing to be almost completely useless, the Cats are just helpless. UConn's big guys are just destroying UK down low, and the Huskies -- unlike the Cats -- actually have guys who can shoot threes.

In retrospect, Calipari shouldn't have taken Jones out of the game. What good did it do to save him for the second half, when the game is now lost?

  10. Kentucky 29 - 50 Connecticut (Halftime)

This will probably be my last comment on this game, so I just want to make a few final points.

First, I can't believe anyone who purports to be an expert on basketball thought that UK would beat UConn. UConn is bigger than Kentucky, they are quicker than Kentucky, they are more disciplined than Kentucky, and they are much better shooters than Kentucky. We couldn't beat them more than once in ten tries.

Second, how is UConn unranked? Except for Duke, they're the best team I've seen all year.

Third, I am very disappointed at the fact that in the last five minutes of the half, UK just stopped playing defense, trying to get rebounds, or running its offense. I knew they were going to lose, and I'm sure they knew they were going to lose, but I still with they had tried harder.

Fourth, I hope that one season, before I die, UK recruits a player who can actually hit three-point shots against good competition. The Cats were 3-17 from threes last night, and they are 2-7 tonight. That's 5-24 -- pretty much close to the level we saw against West Virginia last year. Other teams get guys who can shoot threes -- Duke usually has about four such guys every year -- but we never have any of them.

Finally, we've learned a lot about our team on this trip. They have the potential to be a pretty good team by the end of the year, although they will always struggle to play interior defense. But right now they are simply not capable to taking on a quality team like UConn.
