Kentucky v. ETSU
This game is going to be like one of those Christmases when you were a kid, and you didn't know exactly what you were going to get. Some years it was really great, and other years it would be mostly clothes. This is a whole new team, and I've never seen most of them play (I didn't watch any of the exhibitions), so I'm excited to see what happens. I'm also very nervous, because I am nervous about putting a bunch of freshmen up against a team that went to the NCAAs last year. Oh well. Here goes.

Interesting perspective on last year. The UK radio broadcast opens with a series of famous clips going back to the days of Vernon Hatton. The series ends with a clip from last season, and the clip they decided to use was the play in the SEC final where Cousins got a put-back at the buzzer to send the game into OT. In retrospect, that probably was the most memorable moment of the season.
ReplyDeleteCats are going with Tom Leach and Mike Pratt for another year on the radio broadcast. I think this is a very solid team. There will never be another Cawood, but Leach is excellent and Pratt is, of course, an upgrade over Ralph Hacker.
ReplyDeleteHere's the starting lineup for Kentucky:
ReplyDeleteJosh Harrelson, F (Sr.)
Terrence Jones, F (Fresh.)
Brandon Knight, G (Fresh.)
DeAndre Liggins, G (Jr.)
Darius Miller, G (Jr.)
Harrelson ia 6' 10", but no one else is taller than 6' 8".
Kentucky 8 - 7 ETSU (15:29 left in 1st half)
ReplyDeleteWell, Harrelson lasted less than 3 minutes before picking up his second foul, so I don't think we're going to see too much of him for awhile. Brandon Knight hit a beautiful 3, but missed another one.
A pretty indifferent performance so far.
Kentucky 26 - 19 ETSU (10:36 left in 1st half)
ReplyDeleteWe've had a blizzard of offense, with UK shooting 4-5 from three-point range so far. If that keeps up, I think we'll have a pretty good team.
Kentucky 45 - 33 ETSU (1:18 left in 1st half)
ReplyDeleteThis can't continue, can it? Kentucky has already hit 9 of 16 threes. The last time we saw the Cats, they were going 4-32 from 3-point range against West Virginia. If this team can really shoot like this, it will be one of UK's most popular teams.
Kentucky 50 - 35 ETSU (Halftime)
ReplyDeleteThat was incredibly enjoyable. Jones (freshman) has 12 points, Knight (freshman) has 11 points, Lamb (freshman) has 11 points. Three freshmen in double-digits at the half!
Presumably the Cats will not keep shooting this way. And they don't seem to have much interior defense. But it's been a long time since UK had a good-shooting team, and I would love to see one.
Of course, we should remember that UK hit 15 threes against ETSU in the first round of the NCAA's last year. And that was not representative of our usual shooting touch.
ReplyDeleteI don't have much more to say about the first half because I spent most of it trying to get my TV in sync with the UK radio broadcast. Last season, I spent the whole year with the TV a few seconds ahead of the radio, and it drove me nuts. But now I have DVR, so I should be able to get them in sync -- but I kept going either too fast or too slow most of the first half. Now I'm pretty close, so I'm not going to make any more changes.
ReplyDeleteKentucky 50 - 40 ETSU (18:08 left in 2d half)
ReplyDeleteThe Bucs start off with a running jumper and a three, while UK can't get anything going, so Coach Cal has called time. UK better keep scoring, because I think they are going to struggle on defense. ETSU's power forward already has 19 points in this game.
Kentucky 56 - 42 ETSU (15:43 left in 2d half)
ReplyDeleteTerrence Jones has made a dunk and two beautiful running shots in the lane to kick-start the UK offense.
Kentucky 70 - 44 ETSU (11:28 left in 2d half)
ReplyDeleteThis may be my favorite UK opener since we started with a victory over U of L in 1983-84. Terrence Jones has simply destroyed ETSU -- he has 20 points and 11 rebounds. Lamb has 16 points. Knight has 14 points. UK is 13-21 from three-point range. It has been amazing.
Kentucky 88 - 65 ETSU (Final)
ReplyDeleteWell, it got very, very sloppy after that. But that's fine. I'd rather be able to sit back and enjoy the last 10 minutes of the game than worry. An excellent performance by the Cats. I'm very curious as to where they will go from here.
