Kid Cudi got a lot of praise for his first album Man On the Moon which came out just a year ago. It was a dark concept album which looked into Cudi's struggle with being a public performer who is a loner at heart. He's followed this up with a sequel, another dark concept album now looking at the struggles brought onto the character we learned about on his first album being exposed to fame, drugs, and all the trappings of success.
All in all this is a very solid album. It's a double length album but he's not wasting any space, there are no throw away tracks. It feels almost too personal at times, but the idea is smart and the execution is very well crafted.
I was not a fan of Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak but it has certainly had a stunning impact on hip hop. Without 808s I'm not sure we get either of these albums, and these albums are taking hip hop back to being about something much deeper than what we've had for the past decade.
I could see playing this while taking a long walk along the beach, or a long night drive to the beach.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.
Wow, three out of five!
ReplyDeleteDo you know how many of your reviews have resulted in more than two stars? My guess is that it's less than 10 of them.
i enjoyed that and would've never listened to it had i not read about it at heath post.
ReplyDeleteI counted eleven with three stars and one with four stars.
ReplyDeleteSo that's 12 out of 52. That sounds about right. I like knowing that the HP maintains high standards.
ReplyDeleteThe New Dick Van Dyke Show was so good.
