Album Review: Blow Your Head - Diplo Presents: Dubstep by Diplo

Blow Your Head - Diplo Presents: Dubstep [Explicit]This is the first in the Blow Your Head series by the Mad Decent label.  They are looking to DJs to put together mix tapes that explore a genre, this is Diplo's take on dubstep.

I like this idea and I found this particular mix tape interesting since I knew nothing about dubstep.  Now at least I have an understanding of the sound.

Diplo made a name for himself as an underground DJ in Philadelphia.  His early mix tapes gained a lot of praise.  On this album he is pulling from all over the dubstep spectrum and he manages to keep your interest throughout.  It's a bit long for me at 16 tracks, I think he could have trimmed it down to 12 pretty easily and still kept a wide representation of the genre.

I could see playing this while working out or programming.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

  1. I'll quote from Wikipedia, "Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music, originating from London, UK. Its overall sound has been described as 'tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals'"

  2. this sound reminds me of the music that plays on the "what's-happening-at-this-hotel" tv channel at any fancy hotel.
