I wish I would've thought of this before yesterday; otherwise, maybe we could've started this season. But, next year, maybe The Heath Post could host an online KHSAA-playoffs bracket pool, along the lines of what goes on with the NCAA men's basketball tournament. If we do a bunch of gimmicks like this, I'll bet one would eventually catch on and ratchet us into the Comics Curmudgeon pantheon.
Back to the here and now, I'll be most keenly interested in the following first-round matchups by bracket tonight.
-- Class A: Caverna at Associated Press No. 1 Mayfield. I met a guy at a regional church thing a couple of weekends ago from Second Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Mayfield who said that Jack Morris's son runs the same plays that Jack Morris ran when we were in school. ... Ballard Memorial at Kentucky County Day ... Fulton County at Louisville Holy Cross ... Bethlehem at Crittenden County ... Allen Central at Hazard. The home team, like Mayfield, is 10-0 and ranked second in Class A by the AP.
-- Class 2A: Todd County Central at AP No. 1 Murray. The 10-0 Tigers leap-frogged Newport Central Catholic in the AP poll after the Thoroughbreds lost, 40-39, in two overtimes last Friday to Beechwood. ... Trigg County at Fort Campbell. Writes George Robinson in The Leaf Chronicle of Clarksville, Tenn., "The two schools were long-time rivals as district opponents, but when Kentucky switched to six classifications and reshuffled the district look, Trigg County was removed from the Falcons' regular season schedule. But even that hasn't mattered. The Falcons and Wildcats have met in the 2A playoffs the past two seasons with Fort Campbell winning both times en route to state championships. When Fort Campbell moves to Class 3A next season, Trigg County will be right there, playing along once again in the same district." (Per your request, GoHeath, I expect a close, relatively high-scoring win for the home team, 28-21 or so.) ... Reidland at Owensboro Catholic ... Monroe County at Washington County. This game pits two of my darling teams of this football season, but I'm afraid it doesn't look good for the sliding visitors. Check out how the Commanders bounced back last Friday from their only loss of the season. ... Owen County at Newport Central Catholic. ... Heath (pictured) is idle this weekend.
-- Class 3A: Butler County at Paducah Tilghman. Twenty-three of 24 polled expect Tilghman to pick up All-time Victory 722 tonight, but one wonders if some citizens of Blue Tornado Nation are getting a bit ahead of themselves. ... McLean County at Russellville. Writes Michael Compton in The Park City Daily News of Bowling Green, "Russellville (7-3), which will move back to Class A next season, enters the playoffs the winner of six straight. The Panthers have enjoyed success in the Class 3A playoffs, losing to the eventual state champion two of the last three years. That includes a 21-14 loss to Paducah Tilghman last year - a game decided on a defensive touchdown." ... Magoffin County at AP No. 1 Somerset ... Louisville Shawnee has forfeited its first-round matchup, so North Oldham has advanced, by a score of 2-0, to the second round.
-- Class 4A: Warren East at Lone Oak ... Calloway County at Franklin-Simpson ... Bourbon County at AP No. 1 Boyle County ... Boyd County at Bell County. The homestanding, second-ranked Bobcats are, like Boyle, 10-0. So is No. 3 Allen County-Scottsville, which gets a first-round bye, which, it seems to me, would be a heck of a benefit at this point in the fall.
-- Class 5A: Barren County at Christian County ... Madisonville-North Hopkins at Bowling Green. The Maroons have improved over the course of the season, but my guess would be that they will fall behind quickly against the Purples and won't have nearly the roster depth to mount much of a comeback (35-10?). But I feel a little guilty saying that given that my dad was a Maroon cheerleader and my wife's uncle (No. 52 in the picture below) was on the football team. Upon further review, I predict a huge upset for MNHHS gridders, inspired by the Marching Maroons' SIXTH-STRAIGHT 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! ... Ohio County at Warren Central ... Jeffersontown at AP No. 1 John Hardin ... Louisville Waggener at Anderson County ... Woodford County at AP No. 2 Fort Thomas Highlands ... Ashland Paul Blazer at Covington Catholic. It's not like I've been following Covington Catholic all season, but this is pretty cool.
-- Class 6A: Marshall County at Louisville Fern Creek. This is the game I'm most closely following, as one of the guys who does radio commentary for Fern Creek is a former post-college roommate of mine (at left in Jan. 3, 2004, picture below). If his team wins, he'll be coming next Friday night down to western Kentucky to see the Creekers face Henderson County (who has a first-round bye). This would be outstanding! ... Louisville Southern at Graves County ... Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park at AP No. 1 Louisville Trinity.
I will also mention that "-.pdf" versions of the brackets are available, for printing and posting on your refrigerators for the playoff season.
I'll be listening to the Creekers tonight, hoping they clock Marshall County to set up Russ's trip down U.S. 60 to Henderson. If that happens, there's a chance I'll get to be on the halftime show next Friday as a guest commentator (strengthening The Heath Post's brand awareness in Louisville).

Morris not only uses the same offense, but he also has control of the peewee football leagues in Mayfield. They run that same offense. That's one of the reasons why they are always so good.
ReplyDeleteThe Catholic schools in Louisville do the same thing. A lot of people accuse them of recruiting players -- I'm certainly not going to acquit them of the practice -- but a lot of their success stems from St. Xavier and Trinity having ready made ballplayers, ones who are familiar with their offensive and defensive schemes.
I took a driving tour of the battlefields at Petersburg Virginia. The NPS let us borrow a CD to listen to as we drove through the redoubts and trenches. The narrator said, "The Battle of Fort Stedman was Lee's last offensive movement." Wow!
I realize that this has nothing to do with high school football, but it just popped in my head as I was typing.
The Heath Post is blowing up!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to work the rest of the day to the live stream at WFHS-FM, "The Tiger."
ReplyDeleteWell, I am if it gets at least a hair better than that last song.
OK, the Red Hot Chili Peppers ... this is fine. I like the big tiger roar at the end of the station IDs.
ReplyDeleteAnthony Kiedis is really, really interesting.
ReplyDelete"I'm In" by Keith Urban would've been the most requested song on Paducah's WDDJ in 1985, easily.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is neat. Not only is there a pre-recorded tiger's roar on the station IDs, students come on and do little roars every so often. One girl was very earnest in her roar. And then a too-cool-for-school guy just came on and did a very ironic roar. This is outstanding.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, I was just introduced to a band called "Lisztomania" and its completely catchy song, "Phoenix." I'm a huge fan of WFHS-FM, "The Tiger."
Pardon me. It appears the name of the band is "Phoenix" and the name of the excellent, best-song-of-all-time-right-now song is "Lisztomania."
ReplyDelete92.7FM WFHS Tiger Radio....Jefferson County's ONLY totally STUDENT ran radio station.
ReplyDeleteThat's the opening song off of their 2009 release Wolfgan Amadeus Phoenix.
ReplyDeleteYou can listen to an interview with Phoenix on Sound Opinions.
ReplyDeleteI've moved south and west this afternoon to Cadiz and WHVO Oldies 1480 AM, hoping to hear a little buzz on tonight's Fort Campbell-Trigg County game. Right now I'm getting to hear the oustanding, "Then Came You" by the (Mighty, Mighty) Spinners and Dionne Warwick.
ReplyDeleteThe Fort Campbell Middle School baseball team is selling pork-chop sandwiches at Hancock's Market tomorrow as a fundraiser.
ReplyDeleteHancock's Neighborhood Market is already taking cake/pie and turkey orders for the holidays.
ReplyDeleteIt's time to abandon your foolish vegetarian ways and go buy one of those pork chop sandwiches.
ReplyDeleteWe're looking into buying beef from a dude in Greenville.
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling more confident in my bold forecast of a Madisonville-North Hopkins win at Bowling Green tonight after reading Shane Lucas point out in today's Madisonville Messenger that the Maroons upset the Purples in their last visit to El Donaldson Stadium, in the 2004 playoffs.
ReplyDeleteNow playing on WHVO: Donna Summer's glossy-and-yet-still-passionate sendup of "MacArthur Park."
If I was Washington County coach Mark Perry, I would be privately very nervous about hosting six-straight-wins-and-then-four-straight-losses Monroe County in the first playoff game at Springfield's Bennett R. Lewis Field in 13 years.
ReplyDeleteThere was a great interview on Fresh Air with Jimmy Webb where he talks about this song. One thing that I found really funny was how Richard Harris would always say MacArthur's Park instead of MacArthur Park and if you listen to the Donna Summer version you'll notice she does the same.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say that I'm really glad to see "Ah, Footbah" back on the air. And I will cheer for Fern Creek tonight, thus violating my usual rule of rooting against any and all teams from Jefferson County.
ReplyDeleteI love Donna Summer's version of MacArthur Park.
ReplyDelete"Blue Velvet," Bobby Vinton ... ugh. You know, I had a giant, not-quite-requited crush on a girl whose favorite movie was Blue Velvet. I had never heard of the movie, much less seen it. So, she comes over and brings the movie on videotape, and about five minutes into the movie I knew that this girl and I had happily bumped into each other while amid very different paths.
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic!
ReplyDeleteHost Beechwood and Gallatin County kick off in Fort Mitchell in about half an hour. The Tigers are 7-3 and ranked third in the AP's Class A poll. James Weber of The Cincinnati Enquirer had a fun account of last Friday's fantastic-finish win over Newport Central Catholic (at that time the No. 1 team in 2A). Beechwood's Cameron Vocke might be a name to look out for the rest of this month.
ReplyDeleteFern Creek 18, Marshall County 6 at the half, report Russ and Danny!
ReplyDeleteAnd Danny adds that Trinity is up only 14-6 on PRP.
ReplyDeleteReports O.J. Stapleton in the News-Democrat & Leader of Russellville: "When I look back, I’ve spent 20 years of my life as a part of the Logan County football team – either as a player or coach," (Lee) Proctor said. "I’ve been around for the best – and I’ve been around for the worst. I turn 42 years old (today), so I’m still young, and I just figured it was time for something else."
ReplyDeleteFort Campbell is down, 7-3, against visiting Trigg County late in the first half, says WHVO.
ReplyDelete5:17 to go in the first half at El Donaldson Stadium, and Bowling Green is ahead, 10-0, over visiting Madisonville-North Hopkins, reports WTTL.
ReplyDeleteUPSET ALERT! The WLBN crew reports that this week's Washington County game against visiting Monroe County "has been the talk of the town" around Springfield. The home team has been dominating the stats, but the Commanders trail, 29-20, at the half.
ReplyDeleteAfter an 8-yard Trigg County punt, Fort Campbell takes over at the Wildcats' 43 with less than two minutes to play in the first half ...
ReplyDeleteUPSET ALERT! The Falcons can't get much going, and Trigg County goes into the visitor's locker room at Fryar Stadium clinging to a 9-7 advantage.

ReplyDeleteOh, my, I'm catching up from some old stories that I've collected over the last couple of weeks. Two weeks ago, in his team's 55-35 win over Washington County, "Danville’s junior running back Patrick Brand ... ran for a school record 483 yards on 29 carries with six touchdowns. His output also ranks fourth all-time in the state for a single game," reported Jimmie Earls in The Springfield Sun.
ReplyDeleteMore Springfield Sun Earls after Danville's win at Washington County: "Some critics of Washington County football have fired heated remarks at the Commanders this year, saying they are only doing so well this year because they haven’t played anybody.
ReplyDeleteWhat these ‘rocket scientists’ fail to realize is the 2010 schedule is exactly the same as it was in 2009 when the Commanders went 3-8. ... While some people choose to bellyache and make excuses for why the Commanders are doing so well this year, let’s just all enjoy the ride while it lasts. The kids have enough pressure as it is - doing well in school, working jobs and participating in a plethora of extracurricular activities. They don’t need anyone riding their backs. Remember, these players are just kids. Their emotions are frail and they take everything they hear to heart - even if it’s somebody claiming Washington County has had it easy this year."
6:36 in third quarter ... Monroe County 29, Washington County 27 after a 14-yard touchdown run.
"WC pride!" Monroe County drives to the Washington County 24, but the Commanders intercept with about four minutes to play in the third quarter.

ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, in Springfield, we're headed to the fourth quarter. It remains Monroe County 29, Washington County 27. The Commanders are inside the Monroe 10.
