Wayne Rooney was the best striker in England last year. Man Utd scored 86 league goals in 2009-2010, and he scored 26 of them. He also scored five goals in the Champions League. For months, he carried the team as they tried to catch up with Chelsea. He was also the primary striker for England in the 2010 World Cup.
He's been at Man Utd since the 2004-05 season, and I assumed he would be there for the rest of his career. If he's really leaving, this could have major ramifications for the top of the EPL.
