But Halladay finally became a free agent, and he signed with the Phillies. And today, for the first time in his career, he pitched in a post-season game. And he pitched a no-hitter -- only the second post-season no-hitter in baseball history. So everyone will know him now.

NLDS: Philadelphia 4 - 0 Cincinnati (Philadelphia leads 1-0)
Roy Halladay is one of the best pitchers no one has ever heard of. He has a lifetime record of 169-86. He has a lifetime ERA of 3.32. He has 1,714 strikeouts and only 485 walks. He was the American League's Cy Young winner for 2003. But he spent twelve seasons -- 1998 to 2009 -- with the Toronto Blue Jays. And so he never got to be in the playoffs, and in fact he was almost never on national television. The Onion, as usual, perfectly summed up his career.

it's really, really wonderful to see somebody seize the opportunity like Roy Halladay did.
ReplyDeletei'm rooting for the reds in this series, because Joe B is so eaten up with the reds. but i'm also rooting for the phillies, because the minister who baptized me is so eaten up with them. i hear from Joe B now more often than i hear from the minister, so the reds get a slight edge in my support. ultimately, however, i plan to be thrilled for whoever wins.
After living in Philly I cam to realize that people just don't care that much about the Phillies, so I have a hard time pulling for them.
