I can't think of anything bad to say about this album, but I also can't think of anything good to say about it. For me this album just kind of sits there. It's odd every song feels like it has potential to be really good. To have a hook or a lyric that really grabs you, but every song just comes up short.
I think one of the problems is consistency. To me the best singer/songwriter albums carry a consistent feel throughout. That is a feel in both sound and theme. One issue I would have with this album is that every song feels like she's playing with a different sound, from Lily Allen to PJ Harvey. It's interesting in that we hear a diverse range in what she can produce, but it keeps the album from getting any real vibe.
What this album does though is it makes me interested to hear her next album. If she can find her voice after all of this experimentation then she has the potential to produce a very good album. The problem Tunstall may have is that she's already 35, which is getting old for a musician to produce her best work, but she got to the game late so maybe she has a shot. She'll have to bring some more depth to her lyrics and as I said find a consistency in her sound, but all the makings are there for something very good.
I could see throwing this album on while catching up on your magazine subscriptions or doing Christmas shopping online. I could also see throwing it on the car stereo when heading out with friends for a hike.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.
this song is october's first BREAKOUT HIT for me! thank you for tipping me off to it.
ReplyDeleteWell then you should definitely check out the rest of the album.
ReplyDeleteIn your opinion, is any song on this album as good as "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree"?
ReplyDeleteThe simple answer is no. I don't know if you have seen how she performs, but I think part of the success of that song is that it fits perfectly with how she performs, so it captures her live energy. You can check out a video here. This essentially sounds just like the single.
ReplyDeleteIf you compare that to the live version of "Fade Like a Shadow." You can see where the album version actually loses something. I think she's much better with the stripped down stuff, but I understand her wanting to find a sound for herself on album that explores deeper.
I think what she's going to have to do is venture out and put a band around her to figure out what she can really do. I think this would also allow her to grow as a writer and performer.
I love the when and where you can listen to the albums in your reviews...
