Album Review: Let It Be Me - Mathis in Nashville by Johnny Mathis

Let It Be Me - Mathis In NashvilleMy favorite part of this album is the cover art.  I love the fact that they made this throwback looking cover.

There have been a flood of albums over the past few years featuring older voices and this falls into that camp.  In this one Mathis is singing some country classics.  Personally I think the people who put this album together did a very good job.  They must be big fans of the Mathis Christmas hits and that's the sound they were shooting for and the sound they got.  It just has a country beat underneath.

Mathis still has a very smooth voice at 74 and honestly I wouldn't have known this was a new album if I didn't know it. The producers picked a great group of songs, "Southern Nights" is the only one that is a bit off for me.  Also the songs, being pop country hits, don't push Mathis' range so he's able to sing with an effortlessness that brings back that old feeling of listening to Johnny Mathis at his peak.  "Crazy" is the one song that I would say shows his current vocal limits, but he knows his voice well and covers the song nicely.

I would play this when having my parents over for dinner, or when sitting around the house with the family just talking.

Because I think the producers did such a good job meeting their goals I give this one 3 out of 5 stars following the Rhapsody rating method for Pretty Good.
