Album Review: Charleston, SC 1966 by Darius Rucker
In many ways this album is easy to review. Think Hootie and the Blowfish, then think country music. You pretty much have it.
I didn't even know that Darius Rucker was doing solo work, but this is his third album and his second country album.
For what it is it's OK. It's 13 tracks long and could have been cut down, but there are no tracks that are dreadful, though I could do without "I Don't Care" with Brad Paisley.
The problem with the album as I see it is the same problem I had with Hootie and the Blowfish. It feels so polished. Lyrically, musically, polished in every way. Good country music to me has a bit of grime to it just as good rock does.
I could see throwing this album on at a family reunion or playing while you sit around at the beach, on a week off, while reading summer, fun novels.
Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

Eleanor really likes his stuff.
ReplyDeleteIf I do a country album, I suppose I could call it "Huntsville, AL 1966."
This video is balky for me--just a blank two seconds initially and then immediately looping into an abbreviated, one-minute snippet of the song. Maybe it's just my machine.
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy this song a great deal. In fact, I like a good bit of polished FM adult-contemporary stuff like this, the giant Bonnie Raitt hits, Bruce Hornsby, Nanci Griffith, etc.
If I do a country album, it will be called, "Dr. Oz Says I Might've Taken In a Lot of Estrogen Since Turning Vegetarian and Eating a Lot of Packaged Soy Products, And This Explains a Lot."
