Ah, Footbah

After following the Jets and Rams class in the NFL82 Super Bowl and revisiting the Dolphins' heroic victory in the 1982 AFC Championship, my football interest today will turn to this slate of KHSAA matchups:

Heath at Murray. The best western Kentucky Class A rivalry, circa 1983-85.

Crittenden County at Mayfield. The best western Kentucky Class A rivalry, circa now. This edition pits No. 7 (7-1) at No. 1 (8-0) in the Associated Press A poll.

Danville at Washington County. WHITE-OUT! The Commanders, my favorite Kentucky team other than Heath this season, are now 8-0. What fun they must be having in Springfield this fall, where the coach is doing things like going for it on fourth-and-two and then running fake punts in for touchdowns to hold off an upset bid.

Reidland at Caldwell County. It's hall-of-fame night in Princeton.

Hazard at Pineville. What a mountain matchup this sounds like. Earl Cox this week weighed in, in The Voice Tribune, on the late former Hazard mayor.

Owensboro Catholic at Fort Campbell. The Leaf Chronicle reports that NFL Films has been covering Fort Campbell's practices this week.

Louisville DuPont Manual at Louisville Butler. Butler comes into this game 5-3, barely.

Oldham County at Anderson County. Anderson comes into this game 5-3, barely.

Fort Thomas Highlands at Taylor Mill Scott. Highlands is so good that it added 12 more wins to its tally since last Friday.

AP 6A No. 5 Louisville Ballard (6-2) at AP 6A No. 1 Louisville Trinity (7-1) and Meade County at AP 6A No. 6 Central Hardin (8-0). But, in fact, the only undefeated team in the class can be a little further south down I-65. Josh Claywell in The News Enterprise of Elizabethtown: "The (No. 6 Central Hardin) Bruins have done special things in the last two weeks. They twice rallied from a 14-point deficit Oct. 8 to down district rival Nelson County in overtime, 35-34, and rallied to beat Greenwood in overtime the following week, 26-23. This game could be just as wild." The Bruins host Meade County tonight in Cecilia, in the E-town outskirts.

Monroe County at Green County. My Falcons of Tompkinsville are nearing the end a brutal three-game swing of road dates that has dropped them to No. 10 in the AP's 2A poll. After opening 6-0 this season, Monroe County has subsequently lost 49-35 at Franklin-Simpson and 35-21 at Glasgow. Tonight, it's at 5-3 Green County. On the plus side for Falcon fans, the drives continue to be fantastic. Tonight's Mapquest route is a 1-hour, 4-minute/43-mile snake north along Ky. 163 and then east on U.S. 68.

Lloyd Memorial at AP 2A No. 1 Newport Central Catholic

Jackson County at AP 3A No. 1 Somerset

East Jessamine at AP 4A No. 1 Boyle County

Bowling Green at Warren Central

Trigg County at Ballard Memorial

Logan County at Franklin-Simpson

Fulton City at Fulton County

Madisonville-North Hopkins at Owensboro

Butler County at Russellville

Paducah Tilghman at Louisville Holy Cross on Saturday

  1. At one point in my life I was trying to write a novel about a high school football game in western Kentucky. I based the football stadium in the novel on the stadium at Murray, which was my very favorite place to watch a game when I was in high school.

  2. 26-yard punt by Danville gives Washington County possession at the Admirals' 34 ...

  3. Straight-ahead kicker (also an offensive lineman and linebacker) for the Commanders boots through a 34-yarder ... Danville 7, Washington County 3 ... Love how the Boyle County judge-exec candidate is trying to draw an analogy between the amount of preparation he would bring to that job to what the Admirals do before their games ...

  4. Washington County stops Danville on a fourth-down attempt inside Admiral territory ... "That's a big momentum turner," says a WHIR commentator.

  5. But, alas, Danville forces a three-and-out, takes over after a punt to its 12 and buzzes down the field to take a 14-3 lead ...

  6. "That was just pretty football; I don't care who you are," allows a the play-b-play dude on Danville's WHIR, as Washington County breaks off a 34-yard run to midfield ...

  7. Oh, my, Danville rips an 87-yard run through the middle of the line, and it's 20-3 pending the extra-point attempt in Springfield. Doesn't sound good at all for my darling Commanders.
