2010 UCI Road World Championships - U23 Road Race

Australian Michael Matthews took gold in a sprint finish. He had been a pre-race favorite if it came to a sprint and he delivered on his home turf passing John Degenkolb (Ger) with about 100m to go.

US road champ Benjamin King was the big instigator of the day going out right at the start.  Sad for King no one joined him early and he was left out front for 8 of the 10 laps.  Eventually he was caught and dropped but anyone trying to put together a breakaway had waited to late.  The Australian team was powering at the front and made sure none held.

This meant then a bunch sprint which setup well for Taylor Phinney and he managed to take bronze actually tying with Guillaume Boivin (Can).  It is very rare that you have a tie.  So that's two medals for Phinney who has definitely lived up to all of his hype.
