2010 UCI Road World Championships - Elite Women Road Race

With 7km to go it looked as though we had our gold and silver medalists when Nicole Cooke (Gbr) and Judith Arndt (Ger) broke away from the pack ahead of the final climb.  These are two dominant riders and were two of the favorites to win the race, but there was a good group of 30 chasing and coming in to the last kilometer Arndt and Cooke only had a few seconds.

Arndt was then forced to launch her sprint from 500m out, a huge distance, with Cooke on her wheel.  They could not hold the gap as Marianne Vos (Net) led Emma Johansson (Swe) and Giorgia Bronzini (Ita) past them.  Bronzini then timed her move perfectly passing Vos to take the gold and forcing Vos into silver for the fourth straight year.  Johansson took bronze with Cooke and Arndt left to 4th and 5th respectively.

Amber Neben was the best placed US rider coming in the next group at 17th.  Though the US didn't get a medal, I give them a lot of credit for being the instigators in the race.   When you have no clear race favorite on your team, and do not really even have a strong team, the best thing you can do is try and make things happen.  Too often the US men just sit in the pack but the women never do.  They are aggressive and as always were aggressive today.  Similar to Ben King in the U23 race Katheryn Curi Mattis was the lone breakaway today and held the lead for four laps.  Again like King she was left out alone and so really had no shot, but it did allow her teammates to sit back and rest.  Once the group was back together the remaining US riders except for their leader Neben put in attacks.  Though it didn't pay off for the US this was their best strategy and I was glad to see them leave it all out on the road.
