Album Review: Hemingway's Whiskey by Kenny Chesney

Hemingway's Whiskey [+digital booklet]I've heard of Kenny Chesney for a long time now, but I honestly knew nothing about his music.  Never listened to an album of his, and though I'm sure I've heard singles, never knew it.  Obviously this means I know literally nothing about current country music, because Chesney is huge.  Five of his last six albums have gone to number 1, not just on the country charts, but on the full billboard chart.  The one that didn't made it up to 3.

This latest album has already produced a number one country single "The Boys of Fall," and if the trend follows will produce another three or four number one hits.

Like Enjoy Yourself by Billy Currington, this album is very much a production of the Nashville Music Factory.  Most the songs are penned by well known Nashville songwriters and the album follows a pretty simple formula.  I would say Chesney is a bit more rock than Currington but they both have that 70s rock sound going for them.

Like the Currington album this one doesn't do anything to turn me off, but it also does nothing to excite me.  There isn't any song on here I would want to hear again, and it doesn't inspire me to go back and listen to past Chesney albums.

If I were at a family reunion and they were playing this album in the background it wouldn't bother me.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.

  1. I don't really understand why Kenny Chesney is so popular -- part of it is that he has this whole Jimmy Buffett beach thing going on, and that sort of thing is very popular in the deep South. But on the whole, I find his songs to be fairly bland.

If you want to read an interesting saga, go on Wikipedia and read about Kenny Chesney's ill-fated marriage to Renee Zellwenger.

  2. I have to say that thing with Zellwenger was all I knew about him. I had no idea until I started reading about him that he had this whole beach thing.

  3. Kenny Chesney is huge among a significant percentage of my family.

I do think some of his songs--those written by Craig Wiseman--are really nice pieces of writing.
