Ah, Footbah

Here are the games I will be watching most closely tonight:

-- Calloway County at Heath--Reported Ryan Martin in The Tennesseean after Heath's 37-0 loss to Jo Byrns last week, "The Pirates, on the other hand, seemed unable to get things clicking at all. Running what some would call a gimmick offense, they ran the ball with little variation (and with little success) out of a modified shotgun all night."

-- Lawrence County at Sheldon Clark--Lawrence County has averaged a state-leading 65.7 points through three games.

-- Dayton at Newport. This is the second game for Dayton without its head coach, Zach Deaton, who is suspended.

-- Christian County at Hopkinsville

-- Muhlenberg County at Marshall County--Jody Norwood reported in The Tribune-Courier that, in last week's win over Russellville, the first victory for first-year head coach Ron Barnard, the Marshals gave up two touchdowns in the final four minutes to fall behind, 14-12, and then prevailed, 15-14, on a last-play-of-the-game field goal from a kicker who had missed five of six extra-point attempts on the season.

-- Class 5A No. 1 Fort Thomas Highlands at Boone County--Imagine what Highlands is going to do in 4A.

-- Class A No. 1 Mayfield at Graves County

-- 2A No. 1 Newport Central Catholic at Campbell County

-- Estill County at 3A No. 1 Somerset

-- Mercer County at 4A No. 1 Boyle County

-- Cincinnati Saint Xavier at 6A No. 1 Louisville Trinity

-- Lone Oak at Caldwell County

-- Reidland at Fulton County

-- Ballard Memorial at Murray

-- Bowling Green at Owensboro

-- Warren East at Warren Central

-- Crittenden County at Webster County

-- Fort Campbell at Paducah Tilghman--I'm so glad that Micah Johnson will not be there at McRight Field to cheer on the visiting Falcons.

  1. I wonder if Heath is running some type of single wing. That offense is very popular up here in northern Virginia, and the description in the Tennessean sounds very much like what the single wing would look like if it were run badly.

  2. Louisville Holy Cross is No. 3 in Class A and off to its first 4-0 start since 2004, reports Fred Cowgill of WLKY. "That's not bad for a school of just 300 students. It's so small, almost everybody plays at least one sport."

  3. Washington County is 3-0 for the first time in 13 seasons, and the Commanders host the Lincoln County Patriots at Springfield's Bennett R. Lewis Field tonight. Middle-school and youth-league players in their jerseys get in free tonight, so the roar of the home crowd figures to be significant, if high-pitched.

  4. "Still the One" by Orleans playing on www.Oldies1480.com, which will have tonight's Fort Campbell game at Tilghman. Good song.

  5. They're having a chili cookoff at Founders Square in downtown Hopkinsville. A marching band from the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell is playing. The kickoff will continue until kickoff of the "Hoptown/County football game," as the www.Oldies1480.com DJ just called it.

  6. The "cookoff will continue until kickoff," I meant to type.

  7. The Fort Campbell radio team has been talking about how the view from the press box beyond Tilghman's McRight Field is into a neighborhood. "So, basically, we're looking into a lot of people's living rooms," one said.

  8. It's fun watching the live broadcast of the Newport-Dayton game. Newport, up 21-0 early in the third quarter, wears maroon and black and looks a good bit like the idle Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons. There's a giant, block "N" in the middle of the field. Dayton's in green pants and white jerseys with green numbers.

  9. The unbeaten Washington County Commanders go into the half at the Ben R. Lewis Field in Springfield up 10-0 on Lincoln County. The halftime guest on the www.1590WLBN.com broadcast will be the Saint Catherine's College men's basketball coach.

  10. Oh, outstanding ... one of my old WKU and Bowling Green chums, Todd Hamilton, is the WHOP 98.7 play-by-play man for the Christian County-Hopkinsville game. Down 14-0, Hoptown has fourth-and-one coming up from the County 4. The Tigers take timeout to think about it.

  12. After watching part of that Heath, Ballard game it looks more like they are running the new Jack Haskins offense that has been so successful at Lone Oak. I'm not sure what it is, but it reminds me of that offense that Tim Couch's old high school ran all those years ago.

  13. By the way, one of the sales dudes at Toyota of Hopkinsville was the photographer at my and Rach's wedding. We go to church with him now. He's a UK grad from the mid 1970s--a big Kevin Grevey fan.

    HOPTOWN TOUCHDOWN!

  15. County 29-yard touchdown pass ... it's 21-7 with 2:54 to go in the half.

  17. Ooh, Christian County vs. Madisonville-North Hopkins and Russellville vs. Hopkinsville next week ... I absolutely love every single one of the roads that you could drive among all of these towns.

1:51 to go and County regains possession after a punt with no times out remaining.

  18. County at the Hoptown 44 ... first down ... 42 seconds to go in the half ...

  20. WHOP Todd wisely warns that Hoptown came from behind in wins over Paducah Tilghman and Trigg County already this season--but also reminds us that County has won five straight against Hoptown.

  21. County interception on Hoptown's first possession, so we're going to switch away from this game and head west to Paducah to find out what's happening with Fort Campbell-Tilghman ...

My ladies are out shopping with Rach's folks. But they should be getting home soon, and this will signal the end of tonight's Kentucky-minute "Ah, Footbah" coverage. Let me go ahead and say that it's been fun and thanks for following.

  23. At the kickoff of the second half off Jackson Street, the visiting Fort Campbell Falcons lead the Tilghman Blue Tornadoes, 10-0.

  24. This is Tilghman's homecoming game, and the dude who was crowned homecoming king at high school just caught a touchdown pass: 10-7, Fort Campbell, with about nine minutes to play in the third quarter.

I wish these radio guys would just spend the broadcast talking about Paducah and Micah Johnson.

  25. Josh Forrest, a "Mr. Football" candidate and UK signee, returns an interception for a touchdown, and the home team is suddenly up, 13-10 (missed kick), with 8:13 to go in the third.

  29. The Fort Campbell radio guys are apoplectic that Tilghman coach Randy Wyatt has not been flagged for coming onto the field of play ... Tilghman drives to the Fort Campbell 9 but is pushed back by a sack and a couple of tackles behind scrimmage on sweep plays and misses a 46-yard field-goal attempt.

  30. End of third quarter at Tilghman, and Fort Campbell will have a third down coming ...

  31. Louisville Saint Xavier 14 at Louisville Male 7

  32. Fort Campbell fails on the third down and has to punt ... now the Fort Campbell radio guys are upset that the Falcons' punt was NOT ruled to have hit the foot of a Tilghman player (and subsequently recovered by Fort Campbell) ... Tilghman takes over ...

  33. Tilghman touchdown ... Forrest again.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Boyle County 63 vs. Mercer County 14 ... Murray 42 vs. Ballard Memorial 13 ... Reidland 49-Fulton County 28 ... Oh, my Lord ... Tilghman is now up, 41-10.
