Given that there are no good American golfers under 30, it is not surprising that Americans have been getting drilled in the U.S. Amateur in recent years. Here are the last seven winners:
2009: Byeong-Hun An (Korea)
2008: Danny Lee (New Zealand)
2007: Colt Knost (USA)
2006: Richie Ramsay (Scotland)
2005: Edoardo Molinari (Italy)
2004: Ryan Moore (USA)
2003: Nick Flanagan (Australia)
But this year, the Americans will finally retake the title. In today's semi-finals, the defending champion (Byeong-Hun An of Korea) was beaten by Danny Chung of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Chung, who plays for Stanford, will take on Peter Uihlein, whose biography is like a movie about American golf. Uihlein grew up in the Boston area, now lives in Orlando, and plays for Oklahoma State.
This tournament has been played at the new Chambers Bay course in the Seattle area, which will host the U.S. Open in 2015, and which is fast becoming one of my favorite new courses.
