The Greatness of Jack Nicklaus

Here's how amazing Jack Nicklaus was. Only five men in history have won all four major golf tournaments: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tiger Woods. Nicklaus and Tiger are the only ones to win all four majors at least twice, and they are also the only ones to win all four majors at least three times.

But get this: Nicklaus won all four majors -- a career grand slam -- after his 35th birthday:

Masters: 1975 and 1986
U.S. Open: 1980
British Open: 1978
PGA: 1975 and 1980

In other words, Jack Nicklaus won as many majors after he turned 35 as Nick Faldo or Seve Ballesteros or Lee Trevino won in their entire careers.

Tiger is at 14 majors now, and he turns 35 in December. If wants to pass Nicklaus, he will have to win at least 5 more majors. If he can do it, he will deserve more acclaim than he will probably get.
